Writing Language Objectives Improves Access to Content Concepts!

Although at times it is difficult to know how to work with the English Language Learners in your classroom, they can be a valuable resource.  These students have background knowledge and experiences that can benefit the other students in your class!!  However, they do require specific language objectives and instruction in order access content area concepts.

In the first module, you have learned how to write language objectives that will help your ELLs improve their language acquisition while also giving them access to your subject's content.  Identifying the language demands that your ELLs will encounter, is key to helping ELLs find success in your class.  The common core standards are requiring content teachers to focus on listening and speaking skills.  I believe that this shift in focus will benefit our ELLs and many other struggling learners in the classroom.

How did thinking about your ELLs' level of second language acquisition change the way you approached your instruction with these students?

What did you find difficult about writing a language objective?
